Working with students to establish personalized reading goals is an important component of reading growth and success. A student can read and read, but if they don't see the progress they're making, they can become discouraged or disinterested. Goal setting is a way to keep students motivated and engaged in their own reading growth.

Average-Percent Correct Goal: This goal represents how well students are comprehending (quality of reading). Students should average at least 85% on Reading Practice quizzes. This indicates that a student is reading with a high level of comprehension, which accelerates reading growth. The default goal is set for 85% and may be raised to 90%.
Point Goal: This goal represents how much reading students are expected to do (quantity of reading). The software calculates point goals based on the GE, the amount of time scheduled for daily reading practice, and the length of the marking or goal period. It is not recommended that you give all students the same point goal. If a student indicates that he reads outside of class time, the point goal may be higher than a student who only reads during DEAR time or readers' workshop. Book Level Goal: This goal represents how hard the reading is (difficulty of the book). The book level goal should be set at the low end of students' ZPDs to encourage them to read throughout their suggested reading range. |
